‘Generification of School Libraries’: Workshop at American Embassy School , New Delhi

KOOLSKOOL IN COLLABORATION WITH AMERICAN EMBASSY SCHOOL ORGANISED A WORKSHOP AND VISIT FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIANS IN DELHI ON THE TOPIC “GENERIFICATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES’’ ON 17/01/2019. LIBRARIANS FROM DELHI REGION ATTENDED THE WORKSHOP ORGANISED AT AMERICAN EMBASSY SCHOOL CHANAKYAPURI.

WENDY GUYER – ES TEACHER LIBRARIAN AND LINDA HOISETH – MSHS TEACHER LIBRARIAN CONDUCTED THE WORKSHOP. THE SESSION BEGAN WITH PRESENTATION ON GENERIFICATION. GENERIFICATION OF BOOKS ACCORDING TO THEIR GENRES. THEY TALKED ABOUT THEIR ELEMENTARY (SOOD LIBRARY) AND MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY (STEIN LIBRARY). HOW THEY GENERIFY BOOKS ACCORDING TO THE INTEREST OF THEIR STUDENTS. THEY SPOKE ABOUT CREATING MISSION AND VISION FOR EVERY SCHOOL LIBRARY. MISSION OF AES IS ORGANISED ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES. THE PHILOSOPHY OF AES IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT THAT IT’S RESOURCES AND SERVICES ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAM AND A RESOURCE TO THE AES COMMUNITY. THE LIBRARY PROGRAM AND THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ARE INTERDEPENDENT AND INSEPARABLE.

LIBRARY SELECTION PHILOSOPHY AND   POLICY OF AES IS TO IMPLEMENT, ENRICH AND SUPPORT THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OF THE SCHOOL. IT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE LIBRARIES TO PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS ON ALL LEVELS OF DIFFICULTY, WITH DIVERSITY OF APPEAL AND PRESENTING DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW.

WHAT IS GENERIFICATION?

A MEANS OF CLASSIFICATION THAT IS EITHER AN ADDITION TO, ALTERNATIVE TO, OR AN ADAPTATION OF THE TRADITIONAL DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM.

LIBRARIANS WERE ASKED TO QUESTION THEMSELVES ON:

WHAT HASHTAG WOULD FIT A BOOK?

WHERE WILL THE STUDENTS FIND THIS BOOK? WHERE WILL THEY FIND OTHERS LIKE IT?

HOW CAN WE ENCOURAGE IMPULSE CHECKOUTS?

IF YOUR SALARY DEPENDED ON THE NUMBER OF BOOKS YOU CIRCULATED, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

THE SPEAKERS ALSO DISCUSSED HOW TO START GENERIFICATION OF BOOKS BY SHOWING PPT OF THEIR BOOKS. LIBRARIANS WERE ASKED TO THINK OF GENERIFICATION TO MAKE THINGS EASY FOR STUDENTS AND HOW TO HELP THEM SHOP FOR BOOKS. AFTER THESE WONDERFUL SESSION LIBRARIANS WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS FOR A SHORT VISIT TO SOOD LIBRARY (ELEMENTARY SCHOOL) AND STEIN LIBRARY(MSHS).THE SESSION ENDED WITH THE LIBRARY VISITS. FIRST-HAND LEARNING EXPERIENCE FROM THIS SESSION ON GENERIFICATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES.THANKS TO KOOLSKOOL AND AES FOR PROVIDING SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY.
